E.ON sees degree apprenticeship applications treble as school leavers rethink university-only routes

  • New data from E.ON UK reveals that demand for alternatives to traditional higher education courses is surging
  • Applications per role for E.ON’s degree apprenticeships have more than trebled in the past three years, with around 165 applicants for every role in 2026, compared with 45 per role in 2023
  • Two thirds (68%) of 16- to 18-year-olds believe apprenticeships help them gain workplace skills faster than university, with 67% citing student debt as a key factor in their decision-making
  • AI is also influencing career choices, with 36% of teenagers saying the technology has encouraged them to explore careers less likely to be automated
