Turning Christmas trees into energy

It’s beginning to look a lot like Christmas, and we couldn’t be prouder to support an extremely worthwhile local charity with its sustainability efforts this Christmas.

Bluebell Wood Children’s Hospice’s annual Recycle Your Christmas Tree service returns this year, giving households the opportunity to support the hospice, the local community and the environment.

Bluebell Wood has supported hundreds of children and families from across South Yorkshire, North Derbyshire, North Nottinghamshire and parts of North Lincolnshire since it opened in 2008. The hospice aims to create a home from home, caring for children and young adults whose lives are sadly just too short and supporting families facing the hardest of times.

As the charity’s sustainability partner, we're proud to support their 'Recycle Your Christmas Tree' service as part of our commitment to the communities around our Blackburn Meadows biomass plant.

Every single tree collected gets a second lease of life by being recycled or repurposed with many of them used to generate electricity for homes and businesses throughout the Sheffield City region.

Jess Dhariwal, Plant Manager at Blackburn Meadows, said: “We’re delighted to once again support Bluebell Wood’s Christmas tree recycling campaign. This initiative truly reflects our commitment at Blackburn Meadows to both sustainability and community. Recycling Christmas trees and raising funds for Bluebell Wood is a fantastic way to come together and give back during the festive season.”

Registration for the tree collection service is now open with bookings closing on Tuesday 6 January, with a suggested donation of £15 per collection. Tree collection dates commence on Monday 12 January and run until Friday 23 January across Sheffield, Rotherham, Barnsley, Chesterfield and parts of North Notts.
