The power of public support for clean energy

We recently commissioned research (1) which reveals the British public’s overwhelming support for climate action and local investment in clean energy, highlighting the need for a collaborative approach to achieving the UK's emissions reduction targets and creating a sustainable future for all.

The data speaks volumes:

  • More than two-thirds (67%) of Brits back the UK's 2030 emissions reduction target
  • A similar number (65%) support the 2050 emissions reduction commitment
  • And 65% want more local investment in clean energy projects

According to the research, this widespread endorsement for a more sustainable future goes above political affiliations, with significant backing from voters across the Conservative, Labour, Liberal Democrat and Green voters.

The call for local investment

One of the most striking findings from the research is the public's desire for more local investment in clean energy projects. More than half (51%) of UK adults believe that greater investment in local clean energy initiatives is essential for a new energy world.

But those in both regional and national power should take note that people want a greater say. Only 5% of respondents feel listened to when it comes to decision-making around local green investments, highlighting the need for more engagement with communities, ensuring people’s voices are heard and their needs are met.

Prioritising local services

When asked which local services require investment now, making public transport (32%), hospitals (30%) and homes (23%) more energy efficient are the top three areas respondents say would have the biggest impact in lowering carbon emissions. This is followed by schools, colleges, and universities (21%), public buildings (18%), commercial premises (18%), transport hubs (11%) and sports facilities (5%).

How we’re helping to deliver a greener future

We’re at the forefront of driving local investments in clean energy across the UK.

For example, through our pioneering 15-year strategic energy partnership with Coventry City Council, we’re transforming the city's approach to making energy more affordable, more secure, more local, and, of course, more sustainable.

Our support for the city and its people so far includes:

And our efforts extend beyond Coventry. In Nottingham for example, we’re working with the Queens Medical Centre to help the facility achieve net zero by 2030. This comprehensive project includes a zero-carbon heating and cooling system that uses the natural warmth of the earth, energy-saving windows, and state-of-the-art building controls. These solutions are  aimed at improving local air quality and ultimately benefiting patients by lowering energy costs which ensures budgets can be spent on more pressing medical needs.

Across the UK, our Green Funding Solutions team is working with housing providers, local authorities, government bodies and individual customers to deliver energy efficiency improvements. This improves the sustainability and comfort of homes, while also helping to reduce energy bills for residents.

The power of purpose

Our research findings are a powerful reminder of the public's commitment to a sustainable future. As a trusted energy and solutions provider for millions of people across the UK, we play a crucial role in addressing the challenges around sustainability, climate change – and social mobility.

We’re committed to facilitating the transition to a more sustainable energy world, and to ensuring purpose is at the heart of everything we do. Our approach requires collaboration, innovation, and a dedication to serving present and future generations.

By listening to the public and prioritising local investment, we can create a future that is not only environmentally sustainable but also economically resilient and socially sound.
