Tackling fuel poverty and driving a greener future through Green Funding Solutions
Sustainability isn’t just about reducing carbon emissions – it’s about creating lasting positive change for people, communities, and the planet.
Our Green Funding Solutions (GFS) team has one mission: to reduce fuel poverty.
By partnering with local authorities and securing government funding, we help deliver innovative low-carbon solutions to homes and communities across the UK. The result? Lower energy bills, warmer healthier homes, and a greener future for all.
We sat down with Jamie Brookes, Head of Green Funding Solutions at E.ON, to talk about the team’s mission, achievements, challenges, and future plans. From securing millions in funding to transforming thousands of homes, GFS is proving that sustainable change is about more than just cutting carbon – it’s about improving people’s lives.
Here’s what Jamie told us:
"Our goal in the GFS team is to work with local authorities to secure government funding for innovative low-carbon solutions. Our main objective is to help customers out of fuel poverty, reduce their energy bills, and make homes warmer, healthier and more energy efficient.
Since 2021, we’ve installed more than 28,000 measures into over 19,000 properties. Between 2022 and 2024 alone, we’ve delivered £135 million in lifetime cost savings and saved over 200,000 tonnes of CO₂.
We’ve also:
- Created 90 full-time and 17 part-time jobs on Social Housing Decarbonisation Fund schemes
- Sustained 55 additional jobs across our projects
- Volunteered 195 days to support local causes
- Delivered 300+ training opportunities, including 101 accredited qualifications
- Launched five new green apprenticeships
- Engaged over 600 young people through school and college workshops
- Donated £330,000+ to community causes, from food banks to biodiversity projects
And we’re proud to have worked with HAIG Housing to train armed forces veterans as retrofit assessment specialists, helping them start their careers in the energy efficiency industry.
Everything above is proof that the GFS team’s work is not just about carbon savings – it’s about creating jobs, building skills, supporting local causes, and engaging with young people to inspire the next generation of green leaders."
When asked about the main challenges the team faces, Jamie told us: “Funding delays have been a big challenge. At times we’ve had to demobilise sites due to pauses in government programmes, then remobilise quickly to meet tight deadlines.
The main lesson is that long-term, consistent funding is essential. It allows us to plan better, invest in skills, build stronger partnerships, and deliver real, sustained value for communities.”
And when asked about what the future holds, Jamie said: “As a complete end-to-end solution, we manage projects from start to finish, ensuring they’re delivered on time, on budget, and to the highest standards of safety, quality, and customer satisfaction.
Our plan is to continue to deliver schemes swiftly and successfully, working with our partners and focusing on continuing to improve both our own processes and the experience for our customers.
The future is about scaling our impact while keeping people at the heart of everything we do. Because when we reduce fuel poverty, cut bills, and build green skills, we’re not just hitting carbon targets – we’re building better futures.”
Our Green Funding Solutions team is proving that the journey to clean energy can deliver far more than environmental benefits. By tackling fuel poverty, creating jobs, and investing in skills, they’re building stronger, more resilient communities – one home at a time.
With ambitious plans for growth and innovation, GFS is set to continue leading the way in delivering large-scale retrofit projects that make a real difference for customers, communities, and the planet.
