Supporting the workforce of the future: the value of feedback

Fostering the talent of the future is essential to delivering the energy transition needed to create a more sustainable world. That’s exactly what we aim to achieve with our degree apprenticeship programmes, starting with our recruitment process and supporting all candidates with tailored and detailed feedback.

Our award-winning apprenticeships are shaping the workforce of a more sustainable future. We actively encourage younger generations to apply for our degree apprenticeship scheme, but we also recognise that a successful and confident future workforce is much bigger than just us.

This is why we offer feedback to those candidates who are unsuccessful, helping their onward journey by providing personalised advice. With our highest number of applicants this year, almost 3,000 applicants for just 17 degree apprenticeship roles, we had the opportunity to provide a lot of feedback.

By offering actionable feedback, we aim to support candidates in their future applications and ultimately secure the role that’s right for them. And it goes both ways. We ask candidates for feedback so we can understand their experience and opinions which can help us to improve our recruitment process.

What does this feedback look like?

We aim to provide feedback promptly after each stage of the application process. During the initial application stage, we advise candidates that we will not be continuing with their application soon after the application and online testing and if they reach out for feedback, this is in written form.

For those candidates who make it to one of our assessment centres, we offer each candidate a one-to-one coaching phone call to give them detailed feedback, highlighting their performance in various tasks completed on the day including a pre-prepared presentation, a competency-based interview and group activity.

“The feedback on my interview performance was particularly valuable. It gave me insights into how I can better articulate my thoughts and provide more specific examples in future interviews, particularly the tip about watching Tick Tok videos on the STAR Model.” – Degree apprenticeship candidate

We’re committed to providing clear guidance and practical advice to help candidates improve their future applications. We share general preparation tips and methods and also direct candidates to further practical resources that you can explore ahead of further application processes.

Most importantly, we provide feedback that is detailed and specific to each candidate and their application. We highlight their strengths and weaknesses, so candidates can understand what they did well and where they can improve and illustrate this clearly with specific examples.

And for the candidates who are successful in securing a role, we share their personalised feedback with them when they join E.ON as part of a tailored development plan while completing their degree apprenticeship.

What does this mean for candidates?

Our commitment to the workforce of the future means that we want to help those starting out on their career take their next steps and help ensure their future success.

The degree apprenticeship recruitment process is highly competitive, so we aim to encourage and motivate candidates, even if they weren’t successful this time. Setbacks are always opportunities to learn and improve, and we want to encourage a growth mindset as part of their onward journey.

“No other company has offered such detailed and constructive feedback. It's great to see that E.ON invests in their candidates' development and success, I felt that you really cared about me even if I wasn’t successful.”– Degree apprenticeship candidate

Plus, just because you may not have been successful this time, it does not mean you did not display valuable strengths that can be showcased in any future applications. By helping candidates identify their strengths, we hope to inspire you with the confidence to keep going, while also giving advice on how to improve and build new strengths.

In fact, candidates who received our feedback say it left them feeling not only valued and cared about, but also much more prepared for future applications and it’s even helped some candidates secure another role.

“The feedback from E.ON helped me secure another role. The assessment centre at E.ON was relaxed and inclusive. It made me feel comfortable and valued, and I appreciated the effort put into creating a supportive environment.” – Degree apprenticeship candidate

Can candidates share feedback too?

Feedback goes two ways. We invite candidates to provide feedback on their experience with us. This feedback can give us insights on how we can refine, enhance and improve our recruitment process.

Receiving this insight from candidates helps us to build an inclusive, accessible, and enjoyable. And thanks to such feedback, we’ve made improvements to our process, including inclusivity adjustments and adding greater detail to candidate feedback.
