Equal Parenting Week: Supporting every family journey and raising the standard for parents at work
We believe that supporting families isn’t just a benefit – it’s a responsibility.
This Equal Parenting Week, we’re proud to celebrate the progress we’ve made in creating a workplace where all parents and carers can thrive, and to reaffirm our commitment to building a truly inclusive culture.
Families come in all shapes and sizes, and so do the journeys into parenthood. That’s why our approach at E.ON is rooted in flexibility, empathy and inclusion, ensuring that colleagues feel supported whether they’re becoming parents for the first time, caring for loved ones, or balancing the evolving needs of family life.
Our policies are designed to go beyond statutory requirements, recognising that meaningful support for parents isn’t one-size-fits-all. From enhanced parental leave to flexible working options, we aim to empower colleagues to balance their careers with their family responsibilities in a way that works for them.
Leading the way in inclusive parenting
This commitment has been recognised externally, with E.ON named among the UK’s Top 30 Employers for Working Families, highlighting our leadership in flexible and family-friendly working practices. Employers who make the list are assessed on how well they embed flexibility into culture, policy, and day-to-day experience for employees.
By normalising flexible working and encouraging open conversations about family life, we’re helping to build a workplace where no one feels they have to choose between being a parent and building a career.
Proud to be part of Parenting out Loud
We’re proud to be part of Parenting Out Loud, a movement dedicated to making parenting more visible and supported in the workplace.
Through this partnership, we’re continuing to learn, share best practice, and amplify the voices of parents across our organisation. It’s another step in our journey to ensure that everyone at E.ON feels seen, heard and supported, while continuing to rally behind change within the workplace.
Elliott Rae, Founder of Parenting Out Loud said:
“Equal Parenting Week is such an important moment to recognise that when parents are supported to truly share the care, the benefits ripple far beyond the home. We see improved wellbeing for both parents, better outcomes for children, and real progress in tackling the motherhood penalty that continues to hold many women back at work. It’s fantastic to see E.ON leading the way as a market leader in family-friendly culture and policies. By creating an environment where flexible working is normalised and all parents are supported, they’re not just supporting families – they’re raising the standard for what good work looks like.”
Progress within this policy support has been reflected in twice recognition at the Working Dads Employer Awards, where E.ON was celebrated for embedding flexible working, our parenting policies and championing inclusive leadership. These awards highlight organisations that are challenging traditional gender norms in caregiving and creating environments where all parents can succeed.
Supporting parents every day, not just at milestones
We know that parenting doesn’t begin and end with parental leave. It’s an ongoing journey and one that requires continuous support. That’s why we focus on:
- Flexible working as the norm, helping parents manage school runs, appointments and family time
- Inclusive policies for all family types, including adoptive parents, same-sex parents, and carers
- A supportive culture, where leaders actively champion balance and role model family-friendly working
We’re also committed to removing outdated stereotypes around caregiving. Supporting fathers and non-birthing parents to take an active role is a key part of this, helping to create more equal parenting outcomes at home and at work.
Lee West, Employer Branding Executive at E.ON, said:
“Being a working dad, for me, means that if I survive the morning madness, that’s my first accomplishment of the day! On top of my role, I do both the morning and afternoon school runs for my boys, aged 8 and 4. It’s hectic and messy, but I wouldn’t change it at all. Those ten minutes walking to school are some of the best conversations I have with my kids. I get to hear their thoughts, concerns, and funny stories without any distractions before the rest of my working life takes over.
I truly appreciate my manager and the leadership team for making flexibility in my role possible. It means I can grow a career I really care about and still be present for the small, important moments with my two boys. They might not get why I spend time at work, but they definitely notice when I’m around so I’m really grateful for that.”
Putting people at the heart of our business
Our commitment to families is part of a broader belief: that when people feel supported in their personal lives, they can thrive professionally too.
Across E.ON, this people-first approach has been recognised through multiple awards, including being named “Human Company of the Year” at the TLC Lions Awards two years in a row, a testament to our focus on creating a culture where colleagues feel valued, respected and able to be themselves.
Looking ahead
Equal Parenting Week is an opportunity to reflect – but also to look forward.
We know there is always more to do. By continuing to evolve our policies, listen to our people, and challenge outdated norms, we’re building a workplace where equal parenting isn’t just encouraged – it’s enabled.
Because at E.ON, supporting families means supporting everyone.
