E.ON Next leads industry shift to smarter, more flexible energy for millions of customers
Half Hourly Settlement makes new energy work for everyone – the ‘data foundation’ that helps unlock more affordable, lower-carbon, flexible energy at scale
E.ON Next has become the first large supplier to reach the 90% industry threshold for delivering Market-wide Half Hourly Settlement (MHHS), the data foundation for smarter tariffs and flexibility that will help households and businesses to take control of their energy use, lower their bills, and turn the energy they consume into an asset.
E.ON Next – the first supplier to begin moving customers to MHHS – has now migrated more than 90% of all residential and small business electricity customers, marking a major milestone in the transformation of the UK’s electricity market.
As one of the UK’s largest energy suppliers, supporting millions of homes and businesses, E.ON Next is using its scale to turn market reform into practical benefits for customers.
This new half-hourly data foundation provides more precise energy data for products and services, unlocking more personalised offers, smarter tariffs and better ways for customers to manage their energy use and reduce bills by shifting demand to cheaper, cleaner times of day and when there is more low-carbon power available.
By creating a clearer view of when energy is used, MHHS supports better forecasting for the energy grid, more effective integration of renewable generation and the development of more personalised time-of-use tariffs that reward customers for using energy more flexibly – helping to build a cleaner, more resilient energy system that customers can actively benefit from.
Sarah Royston, Head of E.ON’s Market-wide Half Hourly Settlement Programme, said: “As one of the UK’s largest energy suppliers, we’re turning market reform into practical benefits for customers nationwide – this is just one of the ways we’re making new energy work for everyone by transitioning to a smarter, more flexible energy system.
“This is more than a technical milestone, this new data foundation enables better products, tariffs and outcomes. It helps customers at home to take control of their energy through more precise billing, smarter time-of-use tariffs, greater flexibility and opportunities to save money by shifting energy use to cheaper, cleaner times of the day. For business customers it’s a step towards turning clean energy into a competitive edge.”
Tariffs such as Next Smart Saver, Next Drive and Next Optimise show E.ON Next customers already have access to more ways to benefit from flexibility services and time-of-use pricing, whether that means shifting everyday energy use to cheaper off-peak periods, charging an EV overnight, or making smarter use of solar and battery technology.
E.ON is already translating this reform into real products and customer behaviour change, helping to unlock new opportunities. Better data on how and when customers use energy has supported hundreds of thousands of E.ON Next customers to take advantage of flexibility in recent years. Customers on Next Smart Saver time-of-use tariff are also collectively reducing their energy use by 16% at peak times, helping them to make the most of cheaper, off-peak electricity.
Tanya, an E.ON Next customer from West Yorkshire who switched to a time-of-use tariff, said: “Moving to a time-of-use tariff has helped me make better use of cheaper overnight electricity. Since switching to E.ON Next Drive Smart, I’ve reduced the cost of charging my EV from around £8 to just £3 overnight.”
MHHS is the biggest change to the electricity market since privatisation and is designed to make the system more accurate, responsive and efficient. The programme changes how electricity use is measured and settled, moving monthly customer meter reads to half-hourly data through smart meters.
