Degree Apprenticeship applications are open: See how apprentice Ben is engineering a green future

At E.ON, building a cleaner, smarter energy system starts with people.

Across our business, degree apprentices are gaining hands-on experience, developing future-ready green skills and helping to shape the technologies that will power the UK’s energy transition. One of them is Ben, an Engineer Degree Apprentice currently working at Blackburn Meadows.

After spending over two years with E.ON, Ben is now embedded on site, combining his passion for technology with real-world engineering challenges.

Hands-on learning, real-world impact

Rather than heading straight to university, Ben chose the degree apprenticeship route to gain practical experience alongside his studies.

“I didn’t really want to just go straight to uni, I wanted to get hands-on experience,” he explains. “I applied to lots of different places because it’s very competitive, but thankfully E.ON accepted me and I’m really happy to be here.”

At Blackburn Meadows, Ben’s day-to-day work focuses on digitalisation projects that are improving how the site operates. One of his current projects involves using drone technology to map the site and safely capture images of hard-to-reach areas. Ben says, “In the future, we’ll be able to use images for visual inspections – checking quality and spotting any damage without people needing to work at height.”

Engineering powered by technology

Ben’s role showcases the breadth of engineering opportunities available at E.ON, particularly for those interested in Control Systems Engineering, digital innovation and automation.

Alongside drone work, he’s also developing an AI project designed to interact with sensors across the site, helping teams better understand performance, maintenance needs and safety requirements:
“Using technology is about keeping everyone safe and cutting out wasted time,” Ben explains.

These kinds of projects are a powerful example of how engineering roles at E.ON blend traditional engineering skills with cutting-edge digital solutions, which are skills that are increasingly critical as the energy system becomes smarter and more connected.

A great place to build your future

Ben still has a few months left at Blackburn Meadows and is excited to see where his apprenticeship takes him next. His journey reflects E.ON’s wider commitment to building the future workforce, where:

  • E.ON is a great place to work
  • We are a centre of excellence for green skills
  • We are a leader in reskilling, upskilling and early-career pathways.

By investing in our people, we’re not only supporting individual careers, but we’re also helping secure the future of the energy sector and ensuring people power the energy transition.
