Coaching the transition and why our people power our path to Net Zero
Because delivering the energy transition is about people.
As E.ON continues to build the green skills needed for a net zero future, supporting colleagues through change, growth and development is more important than ever. The E.ON Coaching Community plays a key role in this journey, helping people build the confidence, resilience and mindsets needed to thrive in a rapidly changing world.
Here, Lee Kirton, Leadership Development Lead, shares how coaching is helping to create an inclusive learning culture and empower colleagues to play their part in delivering the transition.
Can you explain the mission and purpose of the E.ON Coaching Community. What inspired its creation and what it aims to achieve for colleagues?
The E.ON Coaching Community was created with two clear ambitions: to build coaching capability across E.ON and to make coaching accessible to everyone.
It was inspired by first-hand experience of how powerful and transformational coaching can be for individuals, alongside our wider talent strategy and our ambition to be a true learning organisation. Coaching offers a highly personalised development experience, tailored to each individual’s needs, and the community enables us to provide that support at scale. Ultimately, our aim is to help colleagues grow, reflect and develop in a way that feels relevant to them.
E.ON often talks about the transition being ‘all about the people’. How does the Coaching Community help develop the skills, mindsets and behaviours colleagues need to deliver that transition successfully?
The transition is fundamentally about change and change requires new skills, mindsets and behaviours. It also affects people in very different ways.
Coaching helps by meeting colleagues where they are, both in their careers and in their lives. It creates space to gain clarity, explore new perspectives and work through short- or long-term challenges. By supporting individuals through change in a personalised way, coaching helps colleagues feel more equipped, confident and ready to contribute to the transition.
How does coaching support colleagues to navigate change, build resilience and stay engaged during periods of transformation?
Coaching provides a safe, confidential space, and dedicated time, for colleagues to pause, reflect and sense-check whether they are on the right path. That might involve exploring objectives, role expectations or longer-term career aspirations.
During periods of change, self-reflection becomes even more important. One of the most common themes raised in coaching is confidence. Seeking support through coaching helps colleagues build that confidence, which in turn enables them to feel more resilient, more engaged and better able not just to cope with change, but to thrive within it.
What role does the Coaching Community play in creating an inclusive learning culture where people feel empowered to grow and try new things?
Coaching at E.ON is open to everyone, with no barriers such as cost, approval or sign-off. Colleagues simply complete a form to access support. Importantly, coaching is always a choice. It’s about wanting to grow, rather than being told you need to. That sense of ownership is key to an inclusive learning culture. Colleagues can explore new ideas, stretch themselves or prepare for new challenges, knowing they have a coach alongside them, either to support them on the journey or help them feel ready to take the first step.
Looking ahead, how do you see the Coaching Community evolving to meet the future needs of colleagues and the organisation?
Our focus is on increasing awareness and engagement with the E.ON coaching offer, while continuing to align our qualified coaches’ skills with strategically important development programmes, key audiences and social value priorities. Our ambition is not only to make coaching available to all colleagues, but to ensure it actively supports the development areas that matter most to the future of E.ON, enabling both personal growth and organisational impact.
Powering the transition through our people
As E.ON continues to invest in green skills and the capabilities needed for the future, the Coaching Community is helping to ensure the transition is truly all about the people. By giving colleagues the space, support and confidence to grow, coaching is building the human foundations of the energy transition, enabling individuals to thrive, and helping E.ON develop the skills, mindsets and behaviours needed to deliver a net zero future togethe
