Accuracy, innovation and opportunity: how we’re leading the way with MHHS
A change that will lead to more accurate bills and a timelier picture of energy usage for every customer, while supporting a smarter, more flexible energy system.
Back in October E.ON Next customers were the first in the country to begin switching to Market-wide Half Hourly Settlement (MHHS) – a new industry improvement that brings great opportunities by enabling innovative and dynamic time-of-use tariffs that reward customers for shifting energy use to off-peak times while supporting a smarter, more flexible energy system.
Once again we’re one of the first business suppliers to qualify to start moving our npower Business Solutions (nBS) customers to the new system.
MHHS is the biggest change to impact the electricity sector since privatisation. Its aim is to create a more efficient and greener electricity grid and to improve how energy suppliers buy and sell electricity.
It works by tracking every customer’s electricity use in half-hour periods, – that’s 48 automatic meter reads a day.
This means customers (both businesses and homes) have a clearer view of exactly how and when they use energy. Insight like that helps enable a smarter, more responsive, and flexible electricity system – and one that can better integrate more renewable generation with less impact on the network – as well as bringing new opportunities for innovative tariffs that make energy more affordable by rewarding homes and businesses that can shift their energy use to cheaper off-peak periods, or can make more flexible use of energy through things like battery technology.
Over the past six months, we’ve been moving our E.ON Next residential and SME customers to the new MHHS system and we continue our leading role in this.
For our nBS customers this migration will begin in mid-May. While many business customers with existing half hourly meters will already have seen some benefit from the flexibility schemes we offer, MHHS will unlock further potential and opportunities to save on costs, especially for those currently on non-half hourly meters. More information can be found for our large business customers on our MHHS hub.
These milestones reflect our commitment to the biggest industry change since 1990 and as playmakers we’re working to help deliver clean, affordable and flexible energy for everyone. It will allow us to tailor energy plans for customers of all sizes, redesigning the electricity sector to improve performance and help us shape a greener future.
