Smarter energy, bigger savings: why Market-wide Half Hourly Settlement is a game changer
Sarah Royston, Head of E.ON’s Market-wide Half Hourly Settlement Programme, shares how this revolutionary change will drive innovation, helping customers save money and carbon.
Now is a really exciting time, the UK’s energy landscape is entering a new era, as Market-wide Half Hourly Settlement (MHHS) brings the biggest change to the electricity sector since privatisation.
Households and businesses will soon have a clearer view of how they use energy than ever before, as the arrival of MHHS unlocks timely data and insight, bringing new opportunities for tariff innovation.
This UK government mandated reform will deliver benefits to industry, suppliers and customers as the frequency of meter data collection is changed to every 30 minutes - half hourly - that’s 48 meter reads a day per customer!
But MHHS isn’t just about meter reads, the wealth of information will provide a precise view of how and when all customers use electricity. It will help us understand consumption patterns, improve demand prediction and support a cleaner more resilient grid. Ultimately, it will help suppliers buy the energy customers need more accurately, more cost effectively and increase procurement from renewable sources.
It will create new opportunities for more flexible products such as Time of Use (TOU) tariffs for customers whose usage can be shifted from peak times. And moves to energy use during non-peak hours will contribute to a lower-carbon grid. Without a doubt MHHS is a game changer, an enabler and a great step forward for the industry.
Households can look forward to more personalised flexible tariffs and potentially significant savings. It will also empower suppliers and businesses with insights that improve forecasting, enhance decision-making, and make energy management a whole lot smarter for all.
Right now, at E.ON we’re driving the programme delivery and are set to have the very first customers moved to the MHHS system in October, helping set benchmarks for the industry as it works to complete migration by May 2027. We’re at the forefront championing innovative technologies and tariffs to help make new energy work and recently launched the UK’s first TOU tariff for mass market. As playmakers we’re working to help deliver clean, affordable and flexible energy for everyone.
MHSS is not just a reform and its far from just compliance. It brings flexibility and a chance to capitalise on innovation. It will allow us to tailor energy plans for customers of all sizes, redesigning the electricity sector to improve performance and help us shape a greener future.
