Save power in the extra hour: E.ON Next inspires households to maximise energy savings as the clocks go back
As the clocks go back this weekend, E.ON Next is encouraging customers to make the most of the extra hour of off-peak electricity with its Smart Saver tariff.
- E.ON Next encourages customers to check appliance timers to make sure they are still aligned with the cheapest energy windows.
- New data from E.ON Next shows customers on the UK’s first mass market time-of-use tariff have shifted their energy use away from peak times into the early morning super-off peak period.
With the clocks going back this weekend, E.ON Next is reminding customers that the extra hour in bed could also be an opportunity to save on energy bills – if they time it right.
E.ON Next customers on the UK’s first mass market time of use tariff, Next Smart Saver, have already saved a combined £135,000* by moving their electricity use away from peak times:
- Nearly three out of four customers (73%) have reduced their 4–7pm peak usage compared to their previous tariff.
- While almost three quarters (74%) have increased their super off-peak electricity use between 2–5am.
But with the end of British Summer Time, E.ON Next shares a timely reminder: check your appliance timers. If you have set your dishwasher or washing machine to start at a certain time, the clocks going back could mean your usual schedule now misses the cheapest super off-peak window (2am–5am) – so a simple check could help you save.
And the clocks changing also mean Next Smart Saver customers will benefit from an extra hour of off-peak electricity, enjoying 19 hours of off-peak electricity this Sunday.
Julian Lennertz, Chief Commercial Officer, E.ON Next, said: “The clocks going back is a great opportunity to rethink how and when we use energy. Our Next Smart Saver customers are already seeing savings by shifting their usage – and with an extra hour of off-peak electricity this weekend, there’s even more potential to save.
“Customers on Next Smart Saver are becoming more aware of when they are using their energy and have told us that using built-in timers on appliances has been a game changer. So, we’re encouraging everyone to double-check their appliance timers and make sure they’re still aligned with the super off-peak window. A small change could make a big difference.”
More than 40,000 customers are already on the pioneering Next Smart Saver tariff since it launched in April this year and the vast majority have saved on their bills. By making savvy energy choices and using technology to shift demand to off-peak (or super off-peak) periods, customers are saving money on energy bills, helping to reduce demand on the electricity grid during the busiest times and contributing to a more efficient and sustainable energy system.
Next Smart Saver is a 12-month fixed-term tariff with three electricity rates: Off-peak (5am-4pm, 7pm-2am) currently costing 21.97 p/kWh, Super off-peak rates (2am-5am) currently costing 16.34 p/kWh and Peak (4pm-7pm) currently costing 39.99 p/kWh.
