Inside E.ON’s energy control room helping 5,500 business buildings cut energy waste
From shops and factories to hospitals and hotels, E.ON Control Solutions remotely manages more than 5,500 business sites across the country – controlling costs and helping organisations to cut wasted energy and make more room for investment
Businesses in Scotland and beyond are turning smarter energy use into a competitive advantage with support from E.ON's Energy Management Centre in Glasgow.
E.ON Control Solutions' Energy Management Centre is where the company’s energy specialists remotely monitor and manage more than 5,500 sites ranging from universities and concert halls and hospitals to retailers, manufacturers and commercial buildings – connecting to building controls to reduce waste, lower overheads and improve operational performance.
From a Tesco store in the Shetland Isles to a Boots pharmacy in Penzance, the energy management centre supports organisations by using live building data to identify inefficiencies, allowing them to adjust heating, cooling and ventilation to match what each building actually needs.
E.ON estimates buildings with a well-maintained energy management system can see energy bill savings of between 15% and 35%. For businesses, reducing unnecessary expenditure can help protect margins and release money for investment, while supporting lower-carbon, more resilient operations.
Vijay Tank, Chief Commercial Officer of E.ON UK’s Energy Infrastructure Solutions, said: "Energy should be more than an overhead that businesses have to absorb – with better data and smarter controls it can become a source of competitive advantage, cutting avoidable costs and freeing up money to invest in people, services and growth.
“From our energy management centre in Glasgow, we’re helping organisations across Europe to take greater control of how their buildings use energy: matching actual demand rather than paying for energy that isn’t needed.
“Making new energy work for everyone means helping businesses to become more affordable to run, more resilient and better equipped to compete.”
A lesson in energy efficiency
At the University of Glasgow’s historic Bute Hall, E.ON Control Solutions worked with the university and partners CBRE to introduce intelligent heating and ventilation controls that respond to how the building is actually being used rather than fixed schedules.
The project reduced energy use and associated operating costs for the ventilation system by around 85%, delivering annual savings of more than 13,000 kWh and £3,200, alongside an approximately 83% reduction in associated carbon emissions.
The example shows how better control of existing building systems can reduce avoidable expenditure while maintaining comfort for visitors, students and staff – an approach relevant to commercial premises as well as public institutions.
By combining live data, remote monitoring and scheduled maintenance, E.ON Control Solutions helps organisations to make better use of their existing building systems. Lower wasted energy means lower avoidable costs and emissions, while earlier identification of emerging issues supports operational reliability.
The approach puts E.ON’s ambition to make energy a competitive asset into practice: giving businesses greater control over consumption and costs, =helping organisations to view energy not just as a cost, but as a strategic asset that can support long-term competitiveness, resilience and sustainability.
