Iconic City of London building, Mode London becomes latest connection to E.ON’s City heat network

E.ON has signed a new connection agreement to connect Mode London (125 London Wall) to its City of London heat network. The agreement is the first ‘sleeved’ supply from E.ON’s Citigen energy centre in the heart of the Square Mile and marks the start of a two decade partnership with the building running into the 2040s.

The ‘sleeved’ agreement means Mode London receives a low carbon heat supply generated by Citigen’s ground source heat pumps, allowing Mode London to benefit in terms of carbon savings from the renewable heat generation. This helps Mode London to boost its Energy Performance Certificate (EPC) rating and showcase its sustainability credentials – key in attracting new future focused tenants and in supporting the City of London’s environmental targets.

Vijay Tank, Chief Operating Officer for E.ON Energy Infrastructure Solutions, said: Heat networks are a key weapon in making energy more affordable, creating an energy system that steers away from our reliance on volatile fossil fuel markets. We’re playmakers in creating a greener tomorrow for everyone, and expanding our network to serve more customers across the Square Mile is central to our ambition to deliver energy that is more secure, sustainable and affordableeven in the complex urban environment of cities like London.

“This ‘sleeved’ heat agreement is a first for our Citigen heat network and offers low-carbon energy from our heat pumps to meet Mode London’s energy and carbon reduction needs. This collaboration demonstrates our continued commitment to delivering innovative, low-carbon solutions for buildings in the City, supporting both our customers and the wider community in their drive towards a greener future.”

Mode London is a striking postmodernist building designed by Sir Terry Farrell and completed in 1992. The 18-floor complex offers high-quality commercial spaces to leading organisations across a range of business sectors, using as much as 2.4GW of heat each year.

The new Mode London supply connection will connect to Citigen’s existing 12km heat network. With the building being located at 125 London Wall and situated adjacent to the network, no work is required above ground level, meaning there will be no disruption to pedestrians or road users while work takes place.

CITIGEN LONDON HORIZON

Citigen is home to one of the UK’s largest low carbon heating and cooling systems and generates enough renewable energy equivalent to around the needs of 13,600 homes and businesses. The £4 million heat pump and geothermal heat generation and storage system, completed in 2023, draws from the natural warmth of the earth as well as recycling waste heat from existing power generation which would otherwise vent into the atmosphere. This energy is stored in boreholes extending 200 metres below the capital and provides zero carbon heating and cooling for connected buildings across the City of London.
