E.ON Next to offer lower standing charge tariff

E.ON Next has today announced it has agreed to offer a lower standing charge tariff to selected customers as part of a limited 12-month trial.

The trial follows Ofgem’s earlier announcement that suppliers would be required to offer a lower standing charge tariff to customers.

E.ON Next will use the trial to give customers greater choice when it comes to their energy tariff and to understand any benefits and impacts of a lower standing charge tariff to them.

A previous E.ON Next trial, carried out in 2024, highlighted the importance for a customer to pay attention to the tariff they are on to understand whether they could be paying less.

The trial found that 64% of customers who took part were high consumption customers, who could have been paying less on another fixed product with a higher standing charge. Nine in ten (90%) of these customers chose to remain on the lower standing charge tariff, despite being told they could be paying less.

Julian Lennertz, Chief Commercial Officer at E.ON Next, said: “We are pleased to be trialling the option of a lower standing charge tariff as we and Ofgem seek to understand how this may reshape bills. It’s important that customers are not adversely impacted, which is why we will be closely monitoring this trial.

“We expect lower usage customers may benefit from this trial, as they may find their existing daily standing charge makes up a significant amount of their energy bills. Higher usage customers may find products with a higher standing charge but a lower unit rate remain the more suitable choice.”

Customers must have a smart meter and pay by direct debit to be eligible for E.ON Next’s lower standing charge tariff.

E.ON Next’s lower standing charge tariff is expected to be available in the Spring. Customers selected to take part in the trial will be able to see the tariff in their account dashboard when it is available.
