Developing a smart and flexible UK energy grid: Ofgem approves distribution licence for E.ON’s IDNO
Ofgem grants E.ON a distribution licence, marking a significant milestone in the launch of its Independent Network Operator (IDNO) business, E.ON UK Network Assets Ltd.
- As government launches its Solar Roadmap, E.ON’s new business aims to simplify smart connections and enable lower carbon technologies to connect to the UK grid
- Able to build, adopt and operate energy networks, it will tailor support for developers, Independent Connection Providers (ICPs), renewable technology solutions, data centres, landowners and consultants.
UK energy regulator Ofgem has issued E.ON with a distribution licence, a key milestone in the plan to establish a new Independent Distribution Network Operator, E.ON UK Network Assets Ltd, a business that builds, adopts and operates electricity networks for its customers.
As the Government’s Solar Roadmap launches within its Clean Power 2030 action plan, E.ON aims to support the development of a smart, flexible energy grid for all. The licence sets the energy company on track to deliver end-to-end electricity infrastructure – from engagement, to design, through to adoption through collaboration with its newly licensed IDNO.
It will provide sustainable and tailored energy solutions for a wide range of customers such as large-scale solar connections, data centres, ICPs, developers, consultants, EV charging providers, landowners and energy storage projects.
Chris Norbury, CEO of E.ON UK said: “As the Government strives to deliver Clean Power 2030 and develop its Solar Roadmap, businesses and organisations need support to connect sustainable energy solutions to the grid at scale and at speed. We’re aligned and ready to do that as Ofgem has now issued a distribution licence in support of our IDNO, ‘E.ON Networks’, placing us on the starting block to streamline and simplify the grid connection and adoption process for our customers.”
It’s expected that the IDNO will reach its final launch milestone in August and as part of the strategic business move, E.ON UK has already created new green jobs, including apprenticeships, to add to its existing capabilities.
Chris Norbury added: “We’re proud to be able to create new clean energy jobs while we support our customers’ green energy goals. Using our in-depth understanding of renewable energy and the steps needed to develop a smarter more resilient energy network, we will help to make the grid adoption and connection process seamless from day one.”
