Silvertown welcomes first residents to London’s low-carbon neighbourhood
The first residents have begun moving into Silvertown, marking a major milestone for one of the UK’s most ambitious low-carbon regeneration projects. Over the coming months the first 100 customers will take up residence in their new homes, bringing our pioneering energy network – the UK’s first – into everyday use.
Silvertown, in London’s Royal Docks, is being transformed by global real estate group Lendlease with support from E.ON, after more than 40 years of inactivity. The regeneration will deliver around 6,500 new homes alongside next-generation workspace, leisure and community facilities, including the restoration of the iconic Millennium Mills. The project is expected to create more than 6,000 new jobs and significant opportunities for the local community.
At the heart of Silvertown is E.ON’s ectogrid™, an innovative heating and cooling network that has the potential to transform how cities use energy. When complete, Silvertown will be the largest ambient heating and cooling network in the UK, reducing energy consumption by up to 75%, improving air quality and supporting a more sustainable urban future.
The London Borough of Newham has set an ambition to be carbon neutral by 2030, making sustainability central to Silvertown’s vision. ectogrid™ meets this challenge by harnessing, sharing and reusing locally available energy – from between buildings as well as capturing waste industrial heat and from natural sources nearby – generating new energy only when it has to. Each building is connected via a low-temperature network, allowing excess heat or cooling to be shared between neighbours, with minimal distribution losses.
Already proven at sustainable developments across Europe, ectogrid™ is being deployed in the UK for the first time at Silvertown and was recognised with a COP28 Energy Transition Changemakers award for energy efficiency.
From early planning to the arrival of the first moving trucks, Silvertown has evolved into a living neighbourhood. As residents settle in, ectogrid™ is no longer a concept or pilot, it is a fully operational heat network supporting real homes and people.
Silvertown demonstrates how innovation and collaboration can bring the energy transition to life, helping to future-proof energy systems, cut carbon emissions and set a new standard for sustainable urban living.
