Making the UK a clean energy superpower: Uskmouth battery project progresses
A former coal power station in South Wales is being reinvented. With one of the UK’s biggest battery storage projects now taking shape, Uskmouth is stepping into the future as a hub for flexibility, stability and smarter energy.
From the air, Uskmouth might still look like a yard of containers. But look closer and you’ll see one of E.ON’s biggest energy investments in the UK coming to life.
On the site of a coal station that once powered the past, we’re building large-scale battery storage that will help power the future. In partnership with Quinbrook Infrastructure Partners, Uskmouth is being transformed into a flexible asset that strengthens the grid, balances supply and demand and helps manage the cost of energy for customers.
The project makes use of existing infrastructure — from the original grid connection to industrial water supplies and rail access — minimising disruption to the local community while maximising value. Once complete, two huge battery systems, each capable of storing 230 megawatt-hours, will be ready to step in when the grid needs it most.
Uskmouth isn’t just a construction site. It’s a symbol of how smart investment and innovative technology can breathe new life into old power stations — and help deliver a cleaner, fairer energy future for everyone.
