How we energised the landmark solar project at the Port of Liverpool
E.ON's Colin Heggie, Project Delivery Manager, talks about the project, it's challenges and how it will become the UK's largest roof-mounted solar array.
Delivered by E.ON in partnership with Peel Ports, the solar installation is helping transform the Port of Liverpool into a cleaner, more sustainable hub for trade and industry. The project will become the UK's largest roof-mounted solar array, with up to 48,000 solar panels generating enough electricity to meet around a quarter of the port's annual energy needs.
With the first stage of the project now complete, a total of almost 7,000 solar panels on the roof of the warehouse known as the ‘Alex Shed’, expanding across space the size of around two football pitches, are now generating power.
Colin Heggie, Project Delivery Manager at E.ON, said: “This has been an astronomical project to deliver. One that I am incredibly proud of, and the entire team, for being able to get to a point that we are able to energise and start supplying the Port’s needs. It cannot be understated how difficult the weather in these environments is and the team has done an incredible job to get to this point.”
The project, part of a 25-year agreement between Peel Ports Group and E.ON is a powerful example of how industry and government can work together to deliver practical, large-scale decarbonisation. One that will not only help Peel Ports Group reach its goal of net zero emissions by 2040, but support economic growth across the Liverpool City Region.
